These images were taken in the arid lands of northern Spain.  The vivid colours seen in many of the images derive from the red soils and the ripening cereal crops that dominate the landscape in June.  It's tempting to think that these colours were the inspiration behind the Spanish national flag but they weren't. (The colours were actually chosen by Charles III in the 18th century to clearly differentiate Spanish military forces from those of other European countries.)
